Is your website too slow to load? Are there too many bloating graphics or JavaScript reducing the time it takes to load? You should be concerned since Google recently announced in their efforts to “speed up the web” they will include site speed as a factor for ranking web pages.
This has a large factor on how your staff or agency optimizes your code. Some of the “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) web editors such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage (people still use these?) could mask the amount of bloat they place in your code slowing down the load time. Translation: This could hurt your rankings.
So how does your site speed stack up against the rest of the web? Google Webmaster Tools can help you out with this. So can TM. Google also launched a FireFox plugin called Page Speed that, by golly, checks the load time of your website pages. Some of the other noted (*cough* marketing) benefits are:
- Keep your website users engaged
- Reduce bandwidth and hosting fees
- Improve the web!
